Unity That Cannot Be Legislated: A Serbian Patriarch’s Vision of Faith as Foundation

At a national ceremony in Banja Luka marking Serbian Unity Day, Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia offered a theological framework that transcends political identity. True unity, he argued, cannot rest on national, social, or human characteristics alone — it requires a deeper root.

“This unity has one root, which is called the Orthodox faith, the Orthodox Church, the Gospel of Christ,” the Patriarch declared, invoking Saint Sava and Holy Prince Lazar as spiritual anchors of the tradition.

His address centered on the twofold commandment of love for God and neighbor, insisting that communion with Christ is inseparable from forgiveness and acceptance of the other — “even when that person is different.” Faith, he warned, must not remain in declarations but must shape daily thought, speech, and action.

He called the faithful to build bridges “without fear, but also without imposition,” concluding: “Let the Orthodox faith be our banner! Let our Orthodox Church be the place of our unity!”
