The Heart’s Unbounded Love: Ibn Arabi on Transcending Intellect and Senses

The great mystic Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi, in his monumental work Al-Futūḥāt al-Makkiyya, unveils a radical vision of love that shatters conventional boundaries. For seekers of spiritual wisdom, his teachings reveal that authentic divine love belongs exclusively to the heart—not to the intellect or the senses, which are realms of limitation and definition.

Ibn Arabi explains that “love has many principles—different ones, contradictory ones—so no one accepts love except someone who has it in his power to alter and change with the heart in love; and this belongs only to the heart.” The intellect, he notes, derives from the word for hobbling a camel—it confines and defines. But the heart transforms like a clear glass cup, taking on the color of whatever beloved it holds.

Perhaps most astonishing is his declaration that “only God loves God.” Every apparent love between creatures is actually the Divine loving Its own manifestation in another form. The true lover of God, Ibn Arabi writes, “does not disapprove of the lover loving whomever he loves, because the lover of God sees no lover but God in whatever site of manifestation.”

This teaching calls spiritual seekers to a love that embraces all beings, recognizing the single Beloved shining through every face. As Ibn Arabi concludes, the sign of the Divine lover is “a love of all the beings in existence, in every presence.”
