In an age where the soul of democracy is often debated in terms of policy and power, the White House Religious Liberty Commission has released its final report, reminding the nation that freedom of conscience remains the cornerstone of all other rights. Established by executive order in May 2025, the commission, led by Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, delivered its recommendations to President Donald Trump on June 26, focusing not merely on legal protections but on the spiritual health of the republic.

Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, a member of the commission, reflected on the deeper meaning of their work. “It’s the first mention in the First Amendment and it’s basic to our democracy,” Barron told “EWTN News Nightly.” “This is the first liberty. When religious liberty is threatened, all the other liberties are threatened.” The report addresses threats across education, healthcare, the military, and the private sector, while also calling for action against antisemitism.

The commission heard from over 100 witnesses, including scholars who examined the Founding Fathers’ vision. “The whole purpose was to determine to what degree religious liberty is being threatened in our country, and then what recommendations we can make to the president,” Barron explained. The report serves as a spiritual barometer, urging Americans to recognize that the freedom to seek the divine is inseparable from the freedom to be fully human.
