In an unprecedented show of interfaith unity, leaders from Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Indigenous spiritual traditions have issued a joint declaration committing to the protection of the Amazon rainforest, which they collectively recognise as a sacred living entity.

The declaration, signed in Manaus, Brazil, at the conclusion of a week-long interfaith summit, describes the Amazon as "not merely a resource to be managed but a sacred gift that sustains the spiritual and physical life of the planet." It calls on governments and corporations to respect Indigenous land rights, halt deforestation, and recognise the spiritual dimension of ecological destruction.

The summit was notable for the central role played by Indigenous spiritual leaders, who led participants in ceremonies that have been practiced in the Amazon for millennia. Their inclusion marked a significant shift from previous interfaith gatherings, where Indigenous voices have often been marginalised.

The declaration includes concrete commitments: participating faith communities will integrate Amazon protection into their teachings and liturgies, establish funds for Indigenous-led conservation, and advocate for policy changes at national and international levels.

According to organisers, the Amazon was chosen because it represents both the front line of the ecological crisis and a living repository of spiritual wisdom that all traditions can learn from.
