Fifty Years of Fire: What the Steubenville Youth Conferences Reveal About Spiritual Awakening

In 1976, a simple question from priests to Franciscan University’s president sparked a movement that would touch over one million souls. Father Michael Scanlan asked clergy what the university could do for them; they requested an event for teenagers. That summer, the first Steubenville youth conference was born—and half a century later, its spiritual resonance has only deepened.

Father Dave Pivonka, TOR, current university president, reflects on this milestone with wonder. “The teenagers that came to the first youth conferences are now in their late 60s, almost 70 years old,” he told EWTN News. “That’s half a century of young people whose hearts have been touched, who have encountered Jesus in the sacraments.” This year, four sold-out conferences on campus and fifteen across the United States continue the tradition, featuring speakers like Father Mike Schmitz and Chris Stefanick.
