The 90-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader has departed for Delhi for medical treatment and plans an extended stay in Ladakh, his office has confirmed.

The Dalai Lama, who turned 90 on July 6, 2025, left his residence in Dharamshala on Monday morning accompanied by a small medical team. His office released a statement confirming that the visit to Delhi is for routine medical evaluation and that the extended stay in Ladakh is planned for rest and spiritual retreat.

His Holiness is in good spirits and has been actively engaged in his daily practices, said his secretary, Tenzin Taklha. The medical evaluation in Delhi is precautionary, and the stay in Ladakh reflects his deep connection to the regions sacred sites.

Ladakh holds special significance for the Dalai Lama, who has visited the Himalayan region numerous times. The planned extended stay has sparked enthusiasm among local Buddhist communities who view his presence as a blessing.

Monks at the Thiksey Monastery near Leh expressed joy at the news. His Holinesss presence brings peace to our hearts. Ladakh is a land of meditation, and his decision to spend time here is profoundly meaningful, said Venerable Jamyang, a senior monk at the monastery.

The Dalai Lama has been scaling back his public engagements in recent years due to his age but continues to receive visitors and offer teachings. He has repeatedly stated that he plans to live for at least another decade, citing his good health and daily meditation practice.

The Tibetan government-in-exile has not released specific dates for the Delhi visit or the Ladakh stay, citing security considerations. Local authorities in Ladakh have been alerted and preparations are underway.

This development comes amid ongoing discussions about the future leadership of Tibetan Buddhism and the Dalai Lamas succession plans. He has stated that the next Dalai Lama may be born in a democratic country rather than Tibet itself.
