The Dalai Lama, 90, has undergone successful knee replacement surgery at a hospital in New Delhi, his office confirmed on Monday, with doctors reporting an excellent prognosis and a swift recovery underway.

The Tibetan spiritual leader was admitted to the city's Medanta Hospital last week for a scheduled procedure to address chronic knee pain that had limited his mobility in recent months. The surgery, performed by a team of orthopedic specialists led by Dr. Rajesh Khanna, lasted approximately three hours and was completed without complications.

"His Holiness is resting comfortably and is in high spirits," said his secretary, Tenzin Taklha, in a statement. "The surgery was successful, and the medical team is very pleased with the outcome. He has already begun physiotherapy and is responding well."

The Dalai Lama had been using a walking stick more frequently in public appearances over the past year and had mentioned his knee difficulties during several teachings. He described the decision to proceed with surgery as a practical one, noting, "This body needs maintenance, just like an old car."

Well-wishers from around the world have sent messages of support, and monks at major Tibetan Buddhist monasteries have been conducting prayers for his swift recovery. At the Tsuglagkhang Temple in Dharamshala, special pujas were offered throughout the day.

Doctors expect the Dalai Lama to remain hospitalized for observation for another three to five days before beginning an outpatient rehabilitation program that could last several weeks. His office has indicated that he will scale back public engagements for the remainder of June.

The Dalai Lama has been remarkably active for his age, continuing to give public teachings, receive visitors, and maintain a daily meditation practice. Earlier this year, he traveled to Ladakh and participated in interfaith dialogues. His medical team has praised his physical fitness and positive attitude as key factors in his rapid recovery.

In a message shared with his followers after the surgery, the Dalai Lama said: "I am grateful to the doctors and nurses for their care. Do not worry about me. Use your energy instead to cultivate compassion and serve others. That is the best medicine for all beings."
